Second, explaining residual habit-energy, which has two parts: first, explaining the meaning and citing proof, which has two parts: first, explaining the meaning. As for "there still being residual habit-energy," this refers to primal ignorance as residual habit-energy, which is severed at the final mind of equal enlightenment. As for "entering the gate of reiterated mystery," it means rendering the preceding matters wondrous once again, hence called reiterated mystery. Therefore the subsequent phrase says, "again cultivating mundane matters," which means cultivating again to make them wondrous. Having already cultivated them in the ten practices, now about to approach the ultimate, they cultivate them once again. As for "phenomena being like wisps of smoke," that the dharma-nature has residual habit-energy is like empty space having wisps of smoke, not being darkened and obscured by dense clouds. A small amount of salt is like residual habit-energy; the great river is like dharma-nature.
