二、簡菩薩魔。「菩薩云何」者，荊溪云：問前兩教菩薩也。「華嚴」下，前十中後三唯菩薩，前七義通聲聞。三昧魔者，退大取小涅槃。「外道亦修空等」者，暹云：《央掘經》第二文，殊說偈云：「諸佛如虛空，虛空無有相。」央掘訶云：「如來真不空，離一切煩惱，及諸天人陰，是故說名空。嗚呼蚊蜹行，不知真空義。外道亦修空，尼乾且默然。」

Second, discriminating the bodhisattva's māras. Regarding "How can bodhisattvas?" Jingxi states: It asks about the bodhisattvas of the previous two teachings. From "Avataṃsaka" below, among the preceding ten, the last three pertain only to bodhisattvas, while the first seven conceptually apply to śrāvakas. The samādhi-māra refers to falling back from the Great [Vehicle] and grasping the lesser nirvāṇa. Regarding "non-Buddhists also cultivate emptiness, etc.," Daoxian says: In the second fascicle of the Aṅgulimāla Sūtra, Mañjuśrī speaks a verse saying, "The Buddhas are like space, and space has no characteristics." Aṅgulimāla reproaches him, saying: "The Tathāgata is truly not empty; being free from all afflictions and the skandhas of devas and humans, he is therefore named empty. Alas, the conduct of gnats and mosquitoes does not know the meaning of true emptiness! Non-Buddhists also cultivate emptiness; let the Nirgrantha be silent for a while."
