Third, expedient means. Jingxi says: "Question: What is the difference between the triad of personal practice and so forth and the triad of refuting outsiders and so forth? Answer: There are identities and differences. In terms of names they differ, but in terms of meaning they are identical; although there are identities and differences, separating and uniting them is yet another distinction. When speaking of identity in meaning, in the triad of personal practice and so forth, although there are three names, in terms of phenomena they only constitute two, because self and other stand in opposition with no distinct essence. The triad of refuting, establishing, and so forth also has three names, but also only two meanings: refuting and establishing both commonly constitute personal practice and teaching others; hence they only constitute two. If so, why is it necessary to list them again? Answer: Sūtras and treatises each have their intent in adapting to capacities."
