Second, precepts, in two parts: first, phenomenal explanation, in two: first, the four teachings gathering beings, in two: first, indicating those gathered. Regarding "the ten kinds of precept treasuries," the Da zhidu lun explains that ten precepts encompass all precepts, hence called a treasury. First, unblemished: meaning naturally grave [offenses]; if violated, it is like a chipped vessel. Second, unbroken: meaning upholding the saṃghāvaśeṣa [rules]; if violated, it is like a broken vessel. Third, unpunctured: meaning upholding the pāyattika [rules]; if violated, it is like a punctured vessel. Fourth, unmixed: meaning upholding [the precepts] concurrent with dhyāna; because dhyāna maintains the mind, thoughts of desire do not arise, hence called unmixed. The above four precepts pertain to vinaya discipline. Fifth, conforming to the Path: meaning conforming to the principle of truth, capable of destroying delusions of view. Sixth, unattached: meaning having no taint or attachment regarding delusions of thought. The above two precepts pertain to the ultimate truth. Seventh, praised by the wise: a bodhisattva transforming others is praised by the Buddhas. Eighth, autonomous: obtaining mastery in worldly affairs. The above two precepts pertain to conventional truth. Ninth, conforming to samādhi: meaning conforming to the Śūraṅgama samādhi. Tenth, complete precepts of the middle way: fully encompassing all precepts. Regarding "violating conforming to the Path" etc., not having broken views and thoughts violates the precepts of the ultimate truth; not having broken dust-and-sand [delusions] violates the precepts of conventional truth; not having broken fundamental ignorance violates the precepts of the truth of the middle way; hence they are successively classified by the three truths.
