Second, explaining following [the text], in nine parts: first, manifesting identity with the white-robed [laity], in two: first, directly explaining the present meaning, in two: first, phenomenal explanation, in two: first, gathering beings in the cause, in two: first, explaining trace and fundamental benefiting beings. Regarding "A śramaṇa to diligent practice," this translates the name: not attaching to the two extremes, diligently practicing the middle way; therefore, marvelous enlightenment is ultimately called the great śramaṇa. Regarding "Vinaya is evaluating lightness and gravity," the Fengsu tong says: "'The Counsels of Gaoyao' states that Yu created the codes (lü). Lü glosses as evaluate (quan) and glosses as law (fa)." The Shangshu dazhuan says: "The great codes of Pi-tian," where the commentary says: "Upholding the great law of heaven; law is also code (lü)." Therefore the name lü originated in the era of Shun. The study of vinaya evaluates lightness and gravity, like the laws (falü) of this land; hence it is translated as lü.
