Second, entering the Path through Dharma gates, which has two parts: first, explaining that sentient beings' ten mental factors can lead through. "These ten Dharma gates can lead to nirvāṇa": Jingxi says: "This means, why should they merely be named mundane mental factors? They also constitute Dharma gates. How so? While in an ordinary person they are only called 'existence'; when reaching the four withered [trees], they are called 'withered', wherein sensation, conception, volition, and the rest become the withered Dharma gate. The blooming and the 'neither-blooming-nor-withered' are explained following this model. In this Fangdeng [period], whether indeterminate, gradual, or sudden, none go beyond sensation, conception, and the rest." From "Just as an embrace" onward, illustrating by analogy: "an embrace [of a tree]" illustrates attaining the Path; "the tip of a fine hair" illustrates the ten mental factors.
