Second, from "Furthermore, the Mahā[parinirvāṇa-sūtra]" onward, explaining that the mental king and mental factors are identical to principle, which has two parts: first, explaining the reasons for the reduction of four in the *Mahāparinirvāṇa-sūtra*. Fascicle twenty-eight of the *Mahāparinirvāṇa-sūtra* states: "At that time, Lion's Roar Bodhisattva addressed the Buddha, saying: 'World-Honoured One! What kind of bhikṣu can adorn the śāla twin trees?' The Buddha adduced six persons and the Tathāgata." The six persons are at the cause, and the Tathāgata resides at the fruit; both cause and fruit obtain the name of adornment. From cause to fruit, from beginning to end, the four virtues are complete, and the signified meaning is manifest; hence it is called adornment. Regarding the six persons at the cause, the sūtra says: "If there is a bhikṣu who receives, upholds, reads, and recites the twelve divisions of scripture, rectifying their sentences and phrases, such a bhikṣu can indeed adorn the śāla twin trees. Lion's Roar said: 'According to how I understand the meaning spoken by the Buddha, the bhikṣu Ānanda is that person.'" Attaining the pure divine eye points to Aniruddha. Having few desires and being content points to Mahākāśyapa. Practicing emptiness without dispute points to Subhūti. Skillfully cultivating spiritual powers points to Maudgalyāyana. Attaining great wisdom points to Śāriputra. For each person, it is extensive like Ānanda. Later, adducing the person at the fruit, it says: "If there is a bhikṣu who can explain that sentient beings all possess the Buddha-nature, attains the vajra-samādhi, and is complete with the four virtues and the eight sovereign selves, such a bhikṣu can best adorn the śāla twin trees. If one lacks them, one is not dignified and adorned. I only pray that the Tathāgata will constantly abide here." The Buddha said: "The nature of all phenomena has no abiding abide. How can you ask me to abide? Although the previous six persons are called greatly learned and up to greatly wise, they must proclaim that all sentient beings possess the Buddha-nature. Having already heard and received prediction in the Lotus Sūtra, it is not that they cannot speak it, but they simply do not equal the person at the fruit." Hence it says that the Tathāgata can best adorn them. Persons at the cause and at the fruit both possess the four virtues; persons at the cause are just entering, so it says "only the Buddha."
