二、料簡。「問何以」等者，荊溪云：若單根本，無此問也。更有觀等四對根本成五，以背捨等皆依禪地，何故別立觀等四耶？答意者，秖是重以觀等觀練根本耳。「料簡云云」者，暹云：數人但云於第四禪中修熏練耳。

Second, critical assessment. Regarding "Asking why..." and so on: Jingxi says that if it were only the fundamental, there would be no such question. There are further the four such as contemplation, which pair with the fundamental to make five; since renunciation and so on all rely on the dhyāna stages, why separately establish the four such as contemplation? The intent of the reply is simply to contemplate and refine the fundamental again by means of contemplation and so on. Regarding "the critical assessment says...": Daoxian says that the Abhidharmikas only say that one cultivates perfuming and refining within the fourth dhyāna.
