Second, on true [nature] and conditioned [arising]. Regarding "the eternal samādhi being quiescent and yet constantly shining": since there are no objects outside the mind, how could a demon conceal its form? With partial truth seeing from afar, this matter is evident. If at the initial mind of the perfect teaching, one only reaches true reality; though [the demon] indulges in transformations and monstrosities, one remains quiescent like space. Regarding "one must prepare a square mirror up to cannot change its original form": the *Baopuzi* states: "Formerly, Zhang Gaipi and Ou Haocheng were meditating in a stone chamber on Mount Yuntai in Shu. Suddenly, four people in unlined yellow silk robes and kudzu headbands came before them, saying: 'How toilsome, Daoists, are your bitter seclusion and practice!' Thereupon the two men looked into a mirror, and they were in fact deer." The *Xu soushen ji* states: "At the foot of Mount Linlu was a pavilion; people passing and lodging there often fell ill or died. At that time, there was Zhi Boyi, who lodged there and sat with a bright candle. In the middle of the night, a dozen people suddenly came, playing gambling games among themselves. Boyi secretly illuminated them with a mirror, and they were a pack of dogs."
