Second, resolution of doubts, which has two parts: first, the question. Jingxi states: The intention of this question is to challenge phenomena by means of principle. Phenomena have duration; principle has no duration. Second, the answer. Jingxi states: The intention in the answer is to distinguish phenomena and principle: first principle, next phenomena. That which is called principle is that this very ignorance and attachment are illumination and liberation; ignorance and attachment, illumination and liberation, are all originally possessed, thus identical with Jingming's compassion of original principle. That which is called phenomena is that sentient beings are still deluded, while Jingming has long been enlightened; Jingming has long moved his nature with great compassion, and sentient beings' capacity activated is met with Jingming's compassion; with capacity and response in accord, the manifestation of illness is thereby formed. Therefore, Jingming's provisional illness is recent, while the real illness of all sentient beings is ancient. Although he had great compassion after making the resolve, he was not yet able to share the illness of sentient beings; therefore, the liberator and the liberated are both without duration, yet duration is discussed. If one knows this intention, one can establish vows, engage in cultivation, respond to capacities, and bestow teachings. The text has three parts: first, in terms of principle, both are absent. Second, under "yet discussing," in terms of phenomena, it exists. Third, under "if relying on," concluding and indicating through mutual contrast. Jingxi states: Regarding 'if relying on principle,' because principle is originally possessed, it is namely ignorance, hence it is said to be ancient. This very ignorance is further named phenomena, so phenomena are also ancient.
