二、問以何為空，二？初、問。荊溪云：分段下，約餘三土對法性問。又「聲」去，約大斥小問。「明空三昧」者，小乘唯但明空，若衍門明十八空中即有空空。下七問答，皆須兩消。

Second, inquiring into what is taken as emptiness, which has two parts: first, the question. Jingxi states: From 'segmented' onward, it inquires by contrasting the other three lands with the dharma-nature. Furthermore, from 'voice' onward, it inquires by using the Great [Vehicle] to reproach the Small [Vehicle]. Regarding "the samādhi of clarifying emptiness": the Small Vehicle only clarifies emptiness, whereas the Mahāyāna, in clarifying the eighteen emptinesses, includes the emptiness of emptiness. The seven questions and answers below must all be interpreted in both ways.
