5. The assembly at that time obtaining benefit. 6. Jingming's confirmation, which has two [parts]: first, dividing the sections; second, explaining following the text, which has two [parts]: first, confirming that Māra cannot destroy [it]; second, clarifying that a bodhisattva who abides in the inconceivable can bring practitioners to accomplishment, which has three [parts]: first, the Dharma. 'As the Lotus Sūtra says, down to "accomplished by"': that sūtra says, 'Owing to the good friend Devadatta, he caused me to be complete in the six pāramitās, down to realizing unexcelled complete enlightenment and broadly delivering sentient beings.' Thus we know that tormenting [the Buddha] life after life to make his practice firm, and manifesting traces in the Lotus Sūtra, are both generally called being a good friend. It does not only refer to the time when he was the seer Asita; therefore it says 'always accomplished by Devadatta'. Where the sūtra says 'mother-of-pearl shells': ke is a type of spiral shell, as pure and white as snow, which can adorn a horse's breast. Second, the simile. Where the sūtra says 'dragon-elephant': this names an elephant a dragon, just as in this land one speaks of a 'dragon-horse'. The 'Offices of Zhou' states, 'A horse of eight feet or more is a dragon; seven feet or more is a lai; six feet or more is a horse.' Master Zhao says, 'The superior among elephants are called dragon-elephants.' If one relies on the Dazhidulun's explanation of the text praising virtues, dragon and elephant are two categories: the dragon is the greatest among aquatic creatures, and the elephant is the greatest among land creatures. Thus we know both explanations are admissible. 'Cuji': the upper character has the fǎnqiē zǐ and liù, meaning to kick backwards with the foot is cu; the lower character has the fǎnqiē tú and hé, meaning to trample. Third, the application.
