Third, from "Question: As for the Dharma..." downward, raising a challenge to the Buddha's own explanations: that is where the sūtra says, "Great compassion is the room, gentleness and forbearance are the robe, and the emptiness of all dharmas is the seat." As for "making the mind one's master," when a prior mind is unwholesome and a subsequent mind follows it, this is called making the mind one's master. When a prior mind is unwholesome and a subsequent mind corrects it, this is called being a master to the mind. The prior mind is instructed by the subsequent mind; hence the *Nirvāṇa [Sūtra]* says: "One should vow to be a master to the mind, not to make the mind one's master." Here, using arbitrary fabrications to explain is an unwholesome mind, and failing to correct it is called making the mind one's master.
