Fourth, the factors of the path. Regarding "the two vehicles have a share in this dharma," Jingxi says: "Because with the dharma of the four truths, the two vehicles must contemplate it from their initial mind. How much more so since the four [teachings] of the four [truths] are each distinct; the [teaching of] arising and ceasing fully uses the dharma of the two vehicles, which is why it says they 'have a share.' The thirty-seven factors are fully detailed in Cessation and Contemplation and the Record, as well as the Sequence of the Dharmadhātu, and cannot be fully set forth here. If we rely on the Vibhāṣā's defiled factors of the path, what would prevent taking them as five, following the previous example? It is just that what is cultivated by ordinary beings and outsiders is also what is cultivated by practitioners of the Buddha-Dharma; it is called 'defiled' merely because uncontaminated [wisdom] has not yet arisen, but in the teachings of outsiders there is no name of 'foundations of mindfulness.'"
