Second, the supramundane elder, which has two [parts]: first, stating the general intent; second, from "first, from the initial" onward, the direct explanation. Regarding "from the initial aspiration": if tracing back remotely to its beginning, then having resemblance [realization] is taken as the aspiration, the meaning of which is as explained before. If taking it closely as the partial truth, then the first dwelling is taken as the aspiration. Now, Jingming's rank resides at equal enlightenment; if tracing back his aspiration, it must combine both meanings, both generating the wisdom of principle in terms of partial truth. Regarding "born in the lineage of the Dharma King": the wondrous principle of the middle way is the Buddha-lineage; now, contemplating this principle to generate wondrous wisdom is called being born in the lineage, which is noble descent. Regarding "realizing the forbearance of the non-arising of dharmas": Jingxi says that only by yielding quiescence and cessation to the Buddha does he abide at the utmost pinnacle of non-arising. Regarding "subduing Māra and restraining non-Buddhists": one should say subduing and restraining both within and beyond the three realms. Regarding "provisional and real": this is because of the provisional and real of identical substance. Regarding "prophecy": one should say conferring the prophecy of the dharmakāya. Regarding "revered by Śakra and Brahmā, and lower beings take refuge in and venerate him": this is spoken temporarily in accordance with what is proximate. If spoken in terms of the four teachings, he is revered by noble deities and taken as refuge by worthy people. Regarding "able to assist Śākyamuni" and so forth: one should say being able to elucidate the Buddha-Dharma in the four lands across the ten directions; the mention of pure lands is not restricted merely to the co-dwelling impure land.
