Second, Rāhula's reply. Regarding "Like the Damamūka-nidāna Sūtra up to the merit of leaving household life": fascicle seven of that sūtra states, "The causes and conditions of leaving household life yield exceedingly great merit. If one frees men, women, male slaves, and female slaves, or permits ordinary people, or oneself leaves household life to enter the Way, the merit is immeasurable. The retribution of giving yields blessings enjoyed for ten lifetimes, going back and forth between the six heavens and humans ten times; yet this still does not equal the superior merit of permitting others to leave household life and leaving household life oneself. Why is this? The blessings that are the retribution of giving have a limit, whereas the blessings of leaving household life are boundless and immeasurable." The sūtra's textual comparisons are exceedingly extensive and cannot be cited in detail. As for the "ten wisdoms," they are as recorded earlier.
