Question: When the Buddha enters the contemplation of emptiness, does he still see a Buddha outside suchness, or suchness outside the Buddha? Answer: If suchness and Buddha were two, that would still be a contemplation of duality; how could it be called nonduality? Since he sees neither two nor one, thus not seeing the five propositions, yet suchness and Buddha are distinctly present. This realm is subtle and profound, the domain of the Buddha alone. Question: Since he does not see the five propositions, why is it called nonduality? Answer: It is precisely because seeing five clearly constitutes a view of duality; because he does not see five, it is called nonduality. Question: That suchness and the Buddha are not different may be called nonduality; but when object and cognition are distinctly present, how is it called nonduality? Answer: Duality is constantly nondual; hence it is called nonduality.
