Others merely take emptiness as the real and existence as the conventional, having no other explanation. Here there are three transitions: First, taking emptiness and existence as conventional, and existence-emptiness as real. Second, taking emptiness and existence both as conventional, and neither-emptiness-nor-existence as real. Third, taking emptiness and existence as duality, and non-emptiness-and-existence as nonduality; duality and nonduality are both conventional, and neither duality nor nonduality is real. Such three transitions of the two truths are all merely gates of teaching. The ultimate Way has never been threefold; hence it is said, 'This Dharma cannot be shown.' Establishing these three levels has five meanings in all, which have already been explained in the Fahua xuan[lun].
