7.18

問：《華嚴》已為菩薩說大法竟，此經復化何人？答：菩薩道根熟有前後，《華嚴》為其卑成，《般若》、《淨名》化其次熟。又《釋論》云「《華嚴》有智菩薩說」，則知《般若》、《淨名》通化小大。又《華嚴》之座雖已得解，於《般若》、《淨名》更復進悟。

Question: Since the Avataṃsaka has already finished explaining the Great Dharma for the bodhisattvas, whom does this sūtra transform again? Answer: The ripening of the bodhisattvas' faculties on the path has earlier and later stages; the Avataṃsaka was for their earliest maturation, while the Prajñā and the Vimalakīrti transformed those of subsequent ripening. Furthermore, the Dazhidulun states, "The Avataṃsaka was spoken for wise bodhisattvas"; thus one knows that the Prajñā and the Vimalakīrti universally transform both the small and the great. Moreover, although they had already attained understanding in the Avataṃsaka assembly, in the Prajñā and the Vimalakīrti they advanced further in awakening.
