These three gates can be matched to the three forbearances. The forbearance of faith is still shallow, like not having yet departed from names and words. The forbearance of the unarisen is already deep, with names and characteristics completely tranquil. The forbearance of compliance is superior when compared to the preceding, and hence it is said to have no words; yet looking toward what follows, it is still inferior, and therefore it has words. These all open the three forbearances within the stages of the true noble ones, from ascending the bhūmis on up to buddhahood. Question: The text has no such words; why assign them arbitrarily? Answer: At the very beginning of this chapter, it states that attaining the forbearance of unarisen phenomena is called entering the gate of nonduality. Viewing it from this, they can indeed be analogized to one another.
