Commentary: This reveals their virtue of being able to crush hostile adversaries. "Māras" refers to the four māras, or further to the eight māras. The *Nirvāṇa-sūtra* states that the former four plus the four inversions are named "māras" because they destroy the four virtues. A māra is precisely an adversary, because they are adversaries to the Dharma. Subduing the māras is explained in a separate chapter. The māras of the four inversions are conceptual Dharma-grasping; they are permanently severed at the first bhūmi and gradually subdued prior to the bhūmis. "Subduing" (制) means to control and govern, like controlling oxen and horses. Possessing wisdom and eloquence, they are able to subdue the heterodox; being close to the ten powers, they are able to subdue the devaputra-māras; being close to the four fearlessnesses, they are able to crush the heterodox.
