贊曰:此下第四修行四部眾。苾芻如前。尼者女聲。女具五義,名苾芻尼。鄔婆索迦者,鄔波近也,迦者事也,此名近事。復言索者,此是男聲,即近事男。以具戒業,堪能親近承事大苾芻眾故,言近事男。鄔波斯迦者,斯是女聲,餘義同前,即近事女。以具戒德,堪能親近承事諸苾芻尼故,名近事女。古云「清信男女」,非也。

Commentary: Below this is the fourth [part], the four assemblies of practitioners. 'Bhikṣu' is as explained before. 'Nī' is the feminine grammatical form. A woman who possesses the five meanings is called a 'bhikṣuṇī.' As for 'upāsaka': 'upa' means near, and 'ka' means service; here it is translated as 'approaching service.' Furthermore, the word 'sa' is a masculine grammatical ending, meaning a layman (upāsaka). Because he possesses the karma of moral precepts and is capable of approaching and serving the great assembly of bhikṣus, he is called a layman (upāsaka). As for 'upāsikā': 'sikā' is a feminine grammatical form, while the remaining meaning is the same as before, namely a laywoman. Because she possesses the virtue of moral precepts and is capable of approaching and serving the various bhikṣuṇīs, she is called a laywoman (upāsikā). The ancient translation 'pure-believing men and women' is incorrect.
