Commentary: These first two lines explain two purities: the first line explains the fifth purity, that of karma; the second line explains the sixth purity, that of renown. Uncontaminated practice is called pure karma; it is deep and wide like an ocean and cultivated over a long time, hence it is said that he has "long accumulated boundless karma". Since his virtue is lofty and superior, he has obtained great renown pervading the lands of the ten directions; because his ten titles are fulfilled, his fame is called superior and renowned.
"Bowing one's head" (jishou): ji means to reach, and shou means head; bringing the head to the ground is called bowing the head; this is an alternative name for paying homage.
"Great Śramaṇa": this is translated as "one who rests from evil". The fruit of Buddhahood is supreme, surpassing everything; hence he is called "Great".
"The subtle and silent" (xiyi): this is the palace of nirvāṇa. That which cannot be heard is called xi, and that which cannot be grasped is called yi. The essence of the subtle and silent is tranquil, because it silences saṃsāra and is fundamentally tranquil by nature.
"Path": this is the way; the path leading to the palace of nirvāṇa is the noble path. The Tathāgata can open this tranquil path for beginners whose faculties are not yet mature, and can guide along this tranquil path for those whose faculties are mature; hence he is called the "opener and guide". "Opening" has the meaning of initiating; "guiding" has the meaning of leading. Moreover, the tranquil path is itself the subtle and silent; just as a charnel ground is called a tranquil path, so the sūtra describes it as the calm and peaceful path.
Furthermore, he is one who can open and guide toward the subtle and silent nirvāṇa and the tranquil path of bodhi; because the Buddha possesses the above six purities, I now bow my head to the Śramaṇa. For this ability to open and guide to nirvāṇa and bodhi, the older sūtra previously had one verse.
