Commentary: Below is the second major section, consisting of four verses, setting forth the benefits to the assembly in order to praise him. It has two parts: first, one verse on the benefits of the body; second, three verses on the benefits of speech. This is the first text. In Sanskrit, one says 'Muni'; translated, it means 'silent and quiescent' (jimo). He can quiet cyclic existence and realize the silent and quiescent Dharma; hence he is called 'Quiescent'. Among all who see the Buddha and are able to follow him, there are none in whose minds pure faith in his virtue does not arise; toward those who do not follow, though faith does not arise immediately, after a long time it will certainly re-emerge. The Buddha manifests divine transformations to rescue them with compassion, facing only toward them and never turning his back, appearing individually before each believer to preach the Dharma for them; and each of those who believe in the Dharma also sees the Buddha appearing solely for them. Conferring benefit and joy right before their eyes is something other people cannot do; hence, these are 'unshared characteristics'.
