Commentary: Below are three verses clarifying the benefits of speech. The general text is divided into three: the Buddha has four unobstructed knowledges (pratisaṃvid); here he does not praise unobstructed eloquence separately, because speaking the other three without obstruction is itself eloquence. First is the unobstructed knowledge of phenomena (dharma-pratisaṃvid), the wisdom that preaches phenomena without obstruction. Second is the unobstructed knowledge of meaning (artha-pratisaṃvid), the wisdom that preaches principles without obstruction. Third is the unobstructed knowledge of etymology (nirukti-pratisaṃvid), the wisdom that preaches in accord with the sounds and dialects of various regions without obstruction. Fourth is the unobstructed knowledge of eloquence (pratibhāna-pratisaṃvid), the wisdom that preaches phenomena, meanings, and the other seven kinds of eloquence skillfully and without obstruction. This praises the unobstructed knowledge of etymology, for the sake of benefiting [others]. 'The Buddha with a single sound' refers to a single moment's sound, a sound of a single regional accent, a sound of a single fundamental essence, and a sound of a single doctrinal teaching. When he preaches the Dharma, the eight classes [of beings] and the four assemblies understand each according to their kind; though the expressions and rhythms of their regions differ, the Buddha is able to match them all, and they consider him to be speaking their own tongue, which therefore constitutes an unshared [characteristic]. Although those on the nine grounds can attain the unobstructed knowledge of etymology, they have not yet perfected it; here, his perfection is revealed.
