Commentary: Below are four verses recounting distinct virtues, expressing sincere refuge with each one, containing nine prostrations. The older translation had three and a half verses; here there are six: first, praising vigor; second, praising freedom from fear; third, praising the attainment of concentration; fourth, praising him as the supreme guide; fifth, praising freedom from contaminations; sixth, praising the attainment of the fruit, as is clear from the text. 'Truth' (諦) means reality. Practicing real vigor is called 'true bravery'. Having eliminated the five fears and attained the four fearlessnesses (vaiśāradya), it is called 'attaining fearlessness'. The older translation said 'attaining freedom from dread', lacking the word 'fear'. The Buddha has reached the unshared qualities of concentration, because the Buddha has attained all sublime concentrations; the older sūtra lacked this. There are nine kinds of fetters (saṃyojana): affection, ill-will, pride, ignorance, doubt, view-fetters, attachment-fetters, jealousy, and stinginess. These nine can bind beings to the five destinies and four modes of birth; the individual bodies of various births are also like fetters, difficult to untie. There are three kinds of bonds (bandhana): greed, anger, and delusion; these bind sentient beings to abide in cyclic existence.
