Commentary: Here there are two acts of taking refuge: first, praising benevolence and compassion; second, praising the attainment of the fruit. Not relying upon cyclic existence is because he transcends the mundane world. 'Attaining the equal destiny of all sentient beings' is because he realizes Nirvāṇa, for Nirvāṇa is the destination to which sentient beings equally go. The older translation's 'knowing well the characteristics of sentient beings' coming and going' referred to coming toward Nirvāṇa and departing from cyclic existence, but the meaning is somewhat off. 'Liberation of mind' (cetovimukti): having already separated from afflictions, since his wisdom is already liberated, the mind associated with it is no longer bound by them, which is called 'liberation of mind'; the Buddha has already attained this regarding all destinies.
