Commentary: Within the perfection of the causes of preaching, below is the second part, clarifying his request for instruction. Within this are four parts: first, clarifying Ratnākara's request for instruction; second, clarifying the Buddha's praise and command to listen; third, clarifying Ratnākara's respectful assent; fourth, clarifying the Tathāgata's extensive explanation. This is the first text. 'A' means non-; 'nuttara' means supreme; 'sam' means right; 'yak' means universal; 'sam' again means right; 'bodhi' means awakening; collectively, it means 'unexcelled, complete, and perfect awakening' (anuttarā-samyak-saṃbodhi). As this is explained as usual, I will not detail it redundantly. 'Setting out' means that the five hundred youths generated the resolve to seek and set out [toward awakening], and in that context they asked me about adorning and purifying the Buddha-land. This has two meanings: the pure land that is adorned, which is the characteristics of the land; and the cultivation that is able to adorn and purify the Buddha-land, which is the cause of the land. Therefore, the question has two parts: first, asking about the characteristics of the pure Buddha-land; second, asking about the causes for cultivating it. The older sūtra said 'we wish to hear about the practice of the pure land,' asking only about the cause and not about the characteristics of the land.
