Commentary: This third [section] explains the reason. The text has two parts: first, explaining the reason; second, adducing a simile to illuminate it. This is the first text, asking first and answering later. The intention of the question here is: earlier it was said that the land of sentient beings is the Bodhisattva's adorned, pure Buddha-land—what is the reason for this? And why is it said now that according to how sentient beings are predominantly benefited, he then gathers in those beings to adorn that land? The Buddha says, "Good sons, the Bodhisattva fundamentally assimilates a Buddha-land and adorns and purifies a Buddha-land; all that he does is for the increase and benefit of sentient beings and for generating pure virtues, and never for anything else. Therefore, he takes the increase and benefit of sentient beings and so forth as the Buddha-land. If sentient beings do not increase in good qualities, benefit, the bestowal of joy, and the generation of pure virtues, they are not what the Buddha transforms, and thus are not the Bodhisattva's adorned, pure Buddha-land." The older text was condensed in meaning and also slightly different.
