問：《佛地經》說「淨土因圓滿者，勝出世間善根所起。」何故此眾說發心等為淨土因？答：彼據正因，能反之因、能導行因，唯智為性。此據要由萬行圓滿方感淨土，故發心等為淨土因，亦不相違。

Question: The *Buddhabhūmi-sūtra* says, "The culmination of the causes of the pure land arises from superior supramundane roots of goodness." Why does this [sūtra] speak of generating the mind and so forth as the causes of the pure land? Answer: That [sūtra] is based on the direct cause, the cause that can reverse [saṃsāra] and the cause that guides practice, whose nature is wisdom alone. This [sūtra] is based on the necessity of completing the myriad practices before the pure land is produced; hence, generating the mind and so forth are causes of the pure land, and there is no contradiction.
