Commentary: This explains the reason. When practitioners adorn and purify their own minds, externally they attract sentient beings and a vessel land that are also pure. If one's own mind is not pure, how could one attain a pure land? Therefore, when a bodhisattva's own mind is pure, the sentient beings who are nominal entities of the five aggregates are also pure; once the inner mind is pure, externally it attracts sentient beings and the vessel that are also pure. The Buddhabhūmi-sūtra says: "Utterly sovereign, pure consciousness is its characteristic." Therefore, when consciousness is pure, the Buddha-land is pure. Heretofore, sentient beings have only been spoken of as the land because they are originally what is transformed. The vessel world was not mentioned because when the land of sentient beings is pure, the vessel world is naturally pure; without being spoken of, it is established on its own.
