Commentary: The Bhagavat addresses him. First he addresses him generally: because of the sins of sentient beings, they do not see the adornment and purity of my Buddha-land; subsequently he addresses him specifically: my land is adorned and pure, yet you do not see it. The Lotus Sūtra says: "I constantly abide here; / through various supernatural powers, / I cause confused sentient beings, / though near, not to see me. / When sentient beings have become faithful and submissive, / upright and gentle in mind, / single-mindedly wishing to see the Buddha, / not begrudging their own bodily lives, / then I and the saṅgha / together emerge on Vulture Peak." It also says: "My pure land is indestructible, / yet the multitude see it burned up, / full of grief, terror, and various distresses, / all filled like this. / These sinful sentient beings, / through the conditions of unwholesome karma, / pass through asaṃkhyeya kalpas / without hearing the name of the Three Jewels." and so forth at length. This is precisely it.
