Seventh, regarding the shared and unshared: The Cheng weishi lun states: "Because the land of the nature of phenomena is realized in common by all Tathāgatas, its essence is without difference. Although the lands of self-enjoyment are transformed differently by each buddha, they are all boundless and do not obstruct one another. The other two buddha lands are shared or unshared in accordance with the sentient beings to be transformed by the various Tathāgatas. Where those to be transformed are shared, at the same place and at the same time, the respective buddhas each transform it into a land as appropriate; their forms resemble one another, they do not obstruct one another, and they interpenetrate each other, serving as an overriding condition (adhipatipratyaya). This causes the beings to be transformed to have it manifest from their own consciousness, so that in a single land there is a single buddha body, manifesting supernormal powers and preaching the Dharma for their benefit. For sentient beings in such a land who are suited to hear Śākya, Maitreya, or Amitāyus, these respective buddhas transform it together. In the case of what is unshared, only one buddha transforms it. From beginningless time, sentient beings by nature and disposition are interconnected with one another, either many being connected to one, or one to many—just as Tiṣya Buddha caused Śākya Bodhisattva to surpass nine kalpas, and so forth. Therefore, the sentient beings to be transformed are either shared or unshared. Were it not so, then multiple buddhas remaining in the world for a long time, each toiling on their own tasks, would truly be to no benefit, since a single buddha can benefit all beings." For this reason, the transformation land and the land of enjoyment for others are either shared or unshared.
