Fourth, their sequential order: When the Tathāgata first attained unexcelled awakening, he obtained them suddenly. Then they arise sequentially: First, establishing all unerring causes and results, he gives rise to the power of the possible and impossible. Next, for those seeking the retributions of the desire realm, in order to teach them to abandon unwholesome karma and practice wholesome karma, he gives rise to the power of one's own karma. Next, for those seeking the path of detachment from desire, instructing them to proceed toward it, he gives rise to the power of dhyānas, vimokṣas, samādhis, and samāpattis. Next, observing the faculties of those who have attained detachment from desire, he gives rise to the power of the superiority and inferiority of faculties. Next, observing the inclinations that precede those faculties, he gives rise to the power of diverse inclinations. Next, observing the dormant tendencies that precede those inclinations, he gives rise to the power of diverse realms. Next, in order to make their portal of entry into dependent origination pure and enable them to enter it, he gives rise to the power of the path leading everywhere. Next, because through practice suited to their portal of entry they have collected and stilled their minds and purified their practice, in order to speak the middle way to them and make them truly abandon the view of personal identity (satkāyadṛṣṭi) and the extreme grasps of permanence and annihilation rooted in it, he gives rise to the power of the recollection of past abodes and the power of death and rebirth. Next, to make them permanently sever all afflictions, he gives rise to the power of the knowledge of the exhaustion of contaminants. There are two further explanations; their sequence is as given in the Bodhisattvabhūmi.
