Commentary: The sound of his preaching of the Dharma is like a lion's roar, because it is fearless; thus he is called 'Lion's Roar' (Siṃhanāda). The resonance of his preaching is like the sound of clouds and thunder—in the Western regions thunder is said to be the sound of clouds—hence he is called 'Cloud and Thunder Sound' (Meghagharjitasvara). Formerly there was no word 'cloud'; Chinese thunder is not of clouds, so the old sūtra omitted it. The sound of his preaching is like two mountains crashing together, thundering and awe-inspiring; hence he is called 'Crashing Mountains' (Girisaṃghaṭṭana), sovereign like a king. Formerly it was called 'Sound of Mountains Crashing'; the meaning is the same.
