Commentary: The superior among elephants is called a fragrant elephant (Gandhahastin); having the strength of a fragrant elephant, he is thus named Gandhahastin. 'Great Fragrant Elephant' (Mahāgandhahastin) is even superior and greater. Formerly it was called 'White Fragrant Elephant'; a white fragrant elephant is not as good as a fragrant elephant, so it ought to be named 'Great Fragrant Elephant'. Cultivating practice without indolence is called 'Constantly Diligent' (Nityodyukta). The wholesome dharmas cultivated are like a cart's yoke, yoking the practitioner's ox toward the palace of nirvāṇa and not proceeding toward anything else. The Bodhisattva constantly abides in the wholesome, hence he is called 'Not Abandoning the Wholesome Yoke' (Anutsṛṣṭa-kuśalayuga). Formerly it was said 'Never Resting' (Anikṣiptadhura); that caught only the general idea, but did not bring out the meaning well.
