Commentary: For any who take refuge with deep and pure three karmic actions, he invariably responds to their prayers by riding the transformations of the six abhijñās, flying his wheel to crush and uproot the dangers and fears of the eight difficulties, acting as an unasked friend and a physician who responds to illnesses, his salvation and gathering-in being inconceivable; hence he is called 'Avalokiteśvara' (Perceiver of Sovereignty). Formerly it was said 'Guanyin' (Perceiver of the World's Sounds), but it is not solely by perceiving sounds that he delivers them. Wherever he wanders, his benefit to sentient beings possesses great majesty and power; hence he is called 'Mahāsthāmaprāpta' (Attained Great Strength). 'Brahmājāla' is like the Great Brahmā King, able to manifest all things within one single thing, netting and bewildering all the Brahmās so that they have faith and submit. The Bodhisattva's supernatural powers netting, bewildering, benefiting, and delighting beings are also just like this; hence he is called 'Brahmājāla'. Holding a jeweled staff in hand to strike sentient beings and cause them to generate an exalted resolve and diligently seek bodhi is why he is called 'Jeweled Staff' (Ratnadaṇḍa). With virtue so high that nothing surpasses it, he is thus called 'Invincible' (Aparājita). Constantly crushing the cohorts of Māra, he is called 'Conqueror of Māra' (Vijayī-Māra). This was absent formerly.
