Commentary: His mother by nature practiced loving-kindness (*maitrī*), and his person also possessed loving-kindness, taking loving-kindness as his clan name (*gotra*); hence he is called 'Maitreya' (He of Loving-Kindness). The explanation of his original circumstances is as in the *Commentary on Maitreya*. Formerly he was called 'Mile', which is this. Mañjuśrī translates as 'Wondrous Auspiciousness' (Mañjuśrī); constantly encouraging sentient beings to perform auspicious deeds that are exceedingly extraordinary is why he is called 'Wondrous Auspiciousness'. Generating the four immeasurables to shelter sentient beings, like a canopy made of pearls and jewels, is why he is called 'Canopy of Pearls and Jewels' (Ratnachattra). This was absent formerly.
