The two chapters below separately recount the past expedient means. Expedient means are of two kinds: first, expediently converting the Śrāvakas; second, expediently converting the Bodhisattvas. Expediently and skillfully displaying illness, he hoped for inquiries so as to deliver living beings. The Buddha commanded the Śrāvakas, telling them to comfort the Mahāsattva; they all declined with their words, having formerly been humbled by that exalted person and now discussing that matter; hence it is named the “Chapter on the Śrāvakas.” The older [translation] says “Chapter on the Disciples.” Because their outward appearance is identical to the Buddha's marks, they particularly received this name. The Buddha knew that the understanding of the Śrāvakas was no match for him, yet to display his eminent virtues, he therefore commanded them, wishing to cause the two vehicles to adopt and reject.
