Commentary: Here there are four virtues: first, the virtue of obtaining seven kinds of eloquence; second, the virtue of accomplishing the three patiences of the non-arising of dharmas; third, the virtue of attaining the four dhāraṇīs; fourth, the virtue of freely exercising the six abhijñās. Following the order of the text, the doctrinal meaning can be understood. As for the seven eloquences: 1. swift eloquence; 2. rapid eloquence; 3. responsive eloquence; 4. unerroneous eloquence; 5. inexhaustible eloquence; 6. eloquence in which whatever is expounded is rich in meaning and flavor; 7. the most supreme and wondrous eloquence in all worlds. The three patiences of the non-arising of dharmas and the others have already been explained above. According to the Benevolent Kings Sūtra (Renwang jing), there are five stages of patience: first, suppressing patience, before the stages [of the bhūmis]; second, faithful patience, across the first, second, and third bhūmis; third, compliant patience, across the fourth, fifth, and sixth bhūmis; fourth, patience of non-arising, across the seventh, eighth, and ninth bhūmis; fifth, quiescent patience, across the tenth bhūmi and the Buddha stage. That text addresses the coarse stages, whereas this addresses their complete fulfillment; they do not contradict one another.
