Commentary: Below, the Great Sage out of compassion separately inquires and commands them to go. The main text has three parts: first, indicating the intention behind commanding them to inquire; next, commanding the ten virtuous ones, who all decline as incapable; afterwards, concluding with the rest of the Śrāvakas, who all decline as not daring. This is the first text. The ten great Śrāvakas are briefly grouped into five pairs: inwardly quieting body and mind versus outwardly making clear words and principle; particularly aiding the poor and suffering versus equally manifesting compassion; instructing initial capacities versus teaching to fruition advanced learners; following along with abhijñās to guide towards goodness versus causing repentance to cease faults; and praising the renunciation of home versus seeking alms and attendance. They were each refuted according to their matched pair, causing each to fall silent. Since the traces of their paths were different, their expedient methods consequently varied. Because of this, the ten sages declined with words, distinguished as five pairs.
