Commentary: Below, he reveals the words of exhaustion. The texts all have two parts: first, recounting his own affair; afterwards, revealing the other's words. This is the first text. If written as 晏 (pronounced wu-jian), it means silence. Here it is written 宴 (pronounced wu-jian), meaning peacefulness. Entering the cessation meditative attainment (nirodhasamāpatti): since when the six sāsrava consciousnesses arise, they necessarily involve labor and worry, detesting them, one now causes them not to operate. Having already made the seventh consciousness anāsrava, one speaks only of the six. Regarding those of the two vehicles, entering the stage of the anāsrava mind of neither-perception-nor-non-perception, they cause the mind and mental factors to become gradually subtler and finer. At the moment of the extremely subtle mind, the seeds that are perfumed can cause the six consciousnesses not to operate; this function is designated as the cessation meditative attainment. It is established based on seeds, as explained in a separate chapter. Alternatively, “sitting in quiet contemplation” means entering the non-conceptual meditative attainment (asaṃjñisamāpatti) to quiet body and mind, not the cessation meditative attainment.
