Commentary: Below, he reveals the other's words. The texts all have two parts: first, recounting his manner of arrival; afterwards, directly setting forth his words. This is the first text. Although Vimalakīrti's virtue and prestige were high, his physical form conformed to common worldly folk; although the Śrāvaka's path occupied an inferior position, his appearance resembled the Tathāgata's; hence he conformed to their type to transform living beings. Coming in ceremony and bowing his head—Kumārajīva was coerced by the Yao ruler and his view was stained by worldly dust; having entered secular life as the guest of householders and having formerly put on the novice robes of the monastic saṅgha, he could not bring himself to humble an exalted virtue to bow before the saṅgha community, and consequently deleted the ceremony of the visitor, omitting any mention of prostrating his head. In accordance with the Sanskrit manuscripts, it is entirely present.
