Commentary: According to the principle of emptiness: the conventional has speech, and therefore has letters; the ultimate cuts off speech, and therefore is without letters. The conventional has deliberation, rising like surging waves of water, and therefore has metaphorical expressions. The ultimate is free from deliberation, and therefore has no metaphorical expressions. According to the principle of the reasonable: in tathatā speech is cut off, so it is without letters. Because tathatā is free from conventional surging thoughts, it has no metaphorical expressions. The older text said ‘the Dharma is without speech, because it is free from vitarka and vicāra’; surging thoughts and the like are precisely vitarka and vicāra.
