贊曰：下第二文，防塞六根。此防五根。見色如盲，不見好惡，寧生愛恚？聞聲如響，不是實聲，誰讚毀者？嗅香如風，無所臧否，誰可增惡？所食味不分別其苦酢甘辛，誰為可翫？誰為可棄？受諸觸境，如智證理，不可談說分別其相，誰為滑澁？故防五根令過不起。

Commentary: Below is the second section, guarding and blocking the six faculties. This [passage] guards the five faculties. Seeing forms like a blind person, one does not see good or bad; how then could love or hatred arise? Hearing sounds like an echo, it is not an actual sound; who is there to praise or disparage? Smelling odors like the wind, there is no good or bad; who could increase disgust? With the tastes consumed, one does not differentiate bitter, sour, sweet, or spicy; what is to be enjoyed, and what is to be cast aside? Receiving touch objects is like wisdom realizing the ultimate truth—it cannot be spoken of or differentiated by marks; what is smooth or rough? Thus, guarding the five faculties ensures that faults do not arise.
