Commentary: Below is the fourth section, which begins by ordering the inquiry. In Sanskrit, Mahāsubhūti; here translated as "Great Shanxian" (Well Manifested). Matching the Buddha's era, he was well able to manifest his birth. Or, having made a great vow in the past, he was well able to manifest before him, penetrating the meaning of emptiness. Or, in the city of Śrāvastī there was a great elder named Kuru who obtained him by praying to heaven. When he was first born, his room was empty and quiet. A physiognomist divined it and named him Shanxian (Subhūti). "Xian" (manifest) means to be born. Because when he was born everything in the room was empty and quiet, this symbolized that upon growing up he would be skilled in understanding the meaning of emptiness; hence he was named Shanxian.
