The Commentary says: Here there are three pairs. First is the pair of liberation and bondage: anāsrava is called liberation, and sāsrava is called bondage. Realizing Nirvāṇa is called being unbound, and not abandoning saṃsāra is called being unliberated. Second is the pair of realization and non-realization: genuinely seeing the truths is called realization, and therefore it is said 'not unseeing'; not seeing is called non-realization, because when realizing the principle there is no mark of seeing. Third is the pair of fruition and non-fruition: a noble one is called 'having attained the fruition'; yet harmonizing with dwelling in saṃsāra and not solely abiding in fruition, it is called 'not having attained the fruition'. Non-noble ones are called ordinary persons; having already realized the true path, one is not an ordinary person. Constantly transforming them, one delights in giving rise to defilements, and therefore it says: 'not leaving behind the phenomena of ordinary persons.' Although attaining fruition and being an ordinary person constitute a single pair, to reveal that one of great compassion harmonizes with saṃsāra, and that saṃsāra is found among ordinary persons, it says again: 'not leaving behind.'
