The Commentary says: Here are three clauses. First, the giver of food later attains the noble path and is able to fall into evil destinies to transform suffering sentient beings; it is not that by giving to a non-field they commit a great sin and fall into evil destinies. Second, the giver of food joins hands with Māra together with the Venerable, never separating day or night, and is able to subdue him. The older [translation] says: 'Acting as toiling companions,' which means acting as companions in the toils of saṃsāra, not supramundane friends. Third, whether walking, standing, sitting, or lying down, one constantly severs afflictions without ever abandoning them, and hence they are companions. Bodhisattvas constantly take conceptual discrimination as affliction, and therefore must sever it. The older sūtra lacked this.
