The Commentary says: Here are two clauses. First, the intrinsic nature of afflictions is precisely tathatā, identical with the nature of the Venerable; the two suchnesses are without difference. Second, regarding 'giving rise to thoughts of enmity and harm toward sentient beings': 'enmity' (yuan) means confronting; one's own cultivation of sublime practices confronts the benefit of sentient beings. 'Harm' means severing and killing; one severs the afflictions, karma, fruits, and saṃsāric transmigration of sentient beings. One constantly conceives such thoughts, as the Mahāyānasaṃgraha speaks of the ten difficult practices, wherein bodhisattvas kill the saṃsāric transmigration of sentient beings, and take what is not given when sentient beings do not give and bodhisattvas forcibly take them, and so forth; this is also like that. The older sūtra says: 'You are no different from the hosts of Māras and all the dust-like afflictions,' because their dharma-nature is without difference.
