Commentary: Below, demonstrating the correct principle. There are three parts: first, that speech is free from characteristics and nature; next, that written words are also free [from them]; and finally, concluding with all phenomena. This is the first passage, investigating why one should not fear written words. The meaning according to the principle of emptiness says: The nature and characteristics of the ultimate truth are in substance completely empty; verbal expressions arise falsely, and are thus devoid of emptiness-nature and do not correspond to principle, so what is there to fear? The meaning according to the principle of conformity (Yogācāra) says: The nature and characteristics of the ultimate truth are in substance ineffable; nominal designations are conventionally established and do not correspond to the reality-nature of phenomena, so all verbal expressions are free from nature and characteristics. Since they are false and conventional, what is there to fear?
